Date: Oct 13, 11
Discussed ideas and expectations of the project.
Time: 20 minutes
Meeting: Trying to get clear ideas
Date: Oct 17, 11
Discussed ideas with whole group to figure out no more than 3 good ideas to present
Time: 25 minutes
Meeting in innovation homeroom
Date: Oct 20, 11
We voted, and the social experiment with technology is our project!
Time: 30 minutes
Meeting in innovation homeroom
Date: Oct 27, 11
Decisions included:
-Setting up timeline of goals for ourselves (Melissa took it down)
-We want each simulation to take about 1 minute
-Decided to replace nature walk with a school/homework simulation, still unsure about Bike simulation
-Everyone will research a little bit, me: technology vs. homework
-The school challenge will be to copy down a body of text into a word processor, while having an MSN conversation.
-Meeting Monday
Meeting during lunch
Date: October 31
- shared research with each other
Time: 30 minutes
Meeting in innovation homeroom
Date: Nov 3, 11
- Got down rough idea of what each exhibit will look like
- Focused on developing driving simulation
- Decided how the driving simulation will work; what the challenge is, the quiz at the end, point system, etc.
- Decided that we will not tell visitors of the cell phone as a distraction, but just have it there, so it is less bias
- Decided that we will incorporate the smart phones by making an app for simulation, which will allow visitors to use their own cell phones, but will still allow us to keep points
- Discussed demo experiment
- Need to decide whether we will have the demo experiment, and if we will, how will it work
Time: 2 hours
Presentation to teachers
Date: Nov 8 2011.
Feedback - Laura suggested using the existing driving exhibit in the science arcade, but altering it for our purposes, for our demo, instead of creating something from scratch in the Great Hall.
Questions:
Gordon - How does exhibit highlight the benefits of technology, and not just the negative sides?
Kate - How is it collaborative?
Jen - How do you quantitatively measure the effect of cell phones in the dinner setting?
Meeting: Proposal and Simulation Breakdown
Date: November 10, 2011 (Innovation homeroom)
-Ellen, Param and Cheryl drew a storyboard of the electronic car simulation. Pretty thoroughly developed, but still need to make it more creative/collaborative
-Brittany and Celton did the proposal for our demo in the Great Hall. Decided not to use Laura's idea because the Great Hall is a better location and will allow us to keep it simple.
-Decided that instead of just a chair and a screen, we will propose a real life (fake) car because it will attract people more.
November 18 - SketchUp Model
-SketchUp Model Started (Alone----->1hr)
November 22
-Spent a little more than an hour to work on applications of the smartphone for the written report
November 23 - Meeting Minutes
Oral report
- email to OSC staff and Paul
- short and concise - 2 pages max
- need to be clear on the science it
Demo
- decided that we would do the demo with students in the class
- need confirmation as to whether we need a proposal for permission
- purpose: to discuss with visitors how the demo worked, get ideas for what we could improve on the exhibit
- demo needs to be closer to the actual exhibit (i.e. reaction time driving simulation in science arcade with smartphones)
- need to think of clear questions to ask
Exhibit
- 1 only--the car simulation
- goal: to get milk from the store (initial text from mom to identify challenge)
- pass checkpoints and get points for how they react to it
- have a few checkpoints without texts first (the control), and then challenges with texts popping up; then compare results
- have option whether to submit data at the end
- points based on whether they open/ reply to text, stopping distance, and reaction time to obstacles
- use app on smartphone to monitor their reaction (only if we can't think of a better way to incorporate smartphones)
- phone app can also have focus/distraction games, links to website for more information, etc.
- before they begin, as for age, a 3 questions
- as the same 3 questions at the end to see if it changed/if they learned anything
- can have different levels with added distractions, such as radio, etc.
Presentation
- don't talk about benefits of phone, because our exhibit only touches on how cell phones can be a distraction in certain situations
November 25 - Meeting
- Defined specific roles for each person to have for the presentation ;
Melissa: Intro
Celton: Discussion
Cheryl: Walk through
Ellen: Walk through
Param: Exhibit set up and application
Brittany: Conclusion
- Discussed certain points to cover in the presentation; what it does, where we want it, etc.
- Brainstormed presentation styles and approaches
Time: 1 hour
December 2 - Met with designers
- Went down to South C to meet with Aylin
- Ran our exhibit idea by her and got her feedback
- She brought up the aspects of accessibility, safety, durability and total environment creation to us i.e would people in wheelchairs be able to use our exhibit, and what if we gave the visitors the ability to create their driving environment etc.
- Discussed the different perspectives of driving, a teen vs. adult
- Narrowed down the method of data representation, age, city, sex, do they have a drivers license, taking in to amount of texts sent and magnitude of score
- (once we went back to class) we discussed how we could incorporate interestinf driving statistics, whether they would pop up while completing the course, have multiple stats play in a slideshow or be printed on the walls surrounding the exhibit etc.
Time: 1 hour
December 3- SketchUp Model Altered
- Modifications made after meeting up with Designers (Alone) (45 min)
December 5 - Presentation run through
- Presentation approach was decided and worked out
- The whole group did a total run through of our presentation
- Took notes on adjustments to make, flow, order of topics to cover etc.
- Discussed presentation etiquette, for example not day dreaming while others are presenting, not fiddling while you are presenting, speaking clearly with good diction and pacing yourself
- Suggestions of improvement were given to each member, and the group as a whole, like don't just talk at the audience, talk to them, if you're interested they will be too.
Time: 1 hour
December 6 - Run through/refining
- Final presentation run through before our mock presentations to teachers
- A few clarifications were made about certain aspects of the exhibit; the exact point system, actual exhibit set up etc.
- Cheryl showed us the final power point she created for the pres. with screen shots of what our simulation would look like, and some of the specific driving tasks - like approaching a red/ red light, stopping for pedestrians.
- Worked on the flow of our presentation, with respects hand offs and introductions
Time: 1 hour
December 7 - Presentation + feedback
- Presented our exhibit "Mind In, Hands On" to the class, teachers and Laura
- Given good feedback from the teachers; like clarifying certain aspects of the exhibit, who will be texting the people, do they have to answer? etc
Time: 20 minutes
Thurs 8 - Presentation revisions
- Thoroughly read through all comments, questions and suggestions made by teachers and made notes on how we could address each problem
- Made revisions and clarifications based on the inquiries, about the set up and layout of the actual exhibit and how the simulation is going to run/work once started
- Discussed changes to make in the power point- that everyone should have a slide while they're talking.
- Had a group reflection on our presentation, how we thought it went and what we could do to make it better. i.e no fidgeting, be sure of what you're saying and if you're using notes just use them.
Time: 2 1/2 hours
Mon 12 - Run through with revisions
- Made sure all presentation adjustments were made
- Went over each persons part and discussed making some things less wordy and more concise/ to the point
- Did a final full run through of our pres. with the new slides and info changes
- Make slight adjustments and suggestions, like for the conclusion to reverse the order it's said- summarizing the exhibit, then talking about it's other abilities and technology's affect on our lives
Time: 1 hour
